This tutorial will show two techniques to apply to an automobile ad.
I will demonstrate how to:
1. Alter the colors.
2. Create the illusion of movement through applying effects to the background.
The image I will start with is shown below. I chose it because it is a side view which works well for applying reflections. It also works well because it shows off a majority of the car's exterior. Two important tips before I start, I am working in RGB color mode because working with color is always more effective using RGB since it is a much wider color spectrum. Second, always work
on a duplicate layer, saving the original, unaltered on a hidden layer. |
The first step is to mask or delete the background. This was a simple task with this photo since the background was mainly white and could easily be selected with the wand. I also removed the shadow underneath the car with the pen tool since I will be adding my own shadow later. |
Next, I will be changing the color of the car. I will be using a hue/saturation adjustment layer since I want to be able to mask out the sections of the car where I want the colors to remain the same as the original image such as the tires, headlights, windows, etc...

The values I used (Hue: 130, Sat:76 Lightness: 0) and their effects are shown to the left. These values worked well for changing the colors to red for this car, but another automobile will require different values. Also, there are numerous other ways for altering colors of objects, this is only one option. |
Next, using a brush and selection tools, I will paint and fill in black any areas on the mask that I don't want to be affected by the Hue/Saturation adjustment. For curved areas of the photo that can't be selected with the wand or painted with the brush, I used the pen tool. The result is shown to the left.

Here, I have shown what I ended up doing with the image of the car. Later, a headline, copy and a logo were added. |
