Tutorial 1 (part 2):

Tutorial 2:
Fixing an underexposed photo

This next effect is one used commonly in car ads - using a motion blur in the background to give the illusion of movement. For this, I will be using the image shown to the left. I have already created a path around the car which I will be using several times throughout the tutorial.

** Start off by duplicating the image (apple+J). The next step will be applied to the duplicated layer only. Leave the initial image alone for now.

To make a selection of the path, in the paths pallette, right click on "Make selection". Select 0 for "Feather Radius" and make sure "Anti-aliased" is checked.

With your path now a selection, hit "apple+J". This will create a new layer with the image within the selection. You will now have 3 layers, the first two with the entire image, the third with just the car.

Repeat the same process to create a selection from your saved path on the first layer. This time, delete the car from the layer.
Withi that layer selected, go to Filter/Blur/Motion Blur. Use the value shown to the left.

The motion blur looks convincing, however, there is still a hole showing where the car on the layer underneath was deleted. In order to fix this, Create the same motion blur effect with the exact same values on the first layer.
It is important to use both layers with motion blur in order to create a successful effect. The one with the car cut out is necessary to cover the red from the car that blurs on the bottom layer when the motion blur is applied. This is shown in the circled areas to the left.
The final image shows a convincing motion blur effect with the car in focus - a difficult effect that it would take an experienced photographer with a high quality camera to get, created convincingly with Photoshop.
